Russia has accused the British navy of an attack on the Nord Stream underwater gas pipelines and has vowed to retaliate for what it called an act of terrorism.
The Russian defence ministry said that British navy personnel were responsible for blowing up the pipelines in September, an allegation that the UK denies.
“There is evidence that Britain is involved in sabotage, a terrorist act against vital energy infrastructure,” Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said. “Such actions cannot be put aside. Of course, we will think about further steps. It definitely cannot be left like this.”
He said the Kremlin would not present evidence to back up its claim, insisting that its defence ministry “deserves trust”. He also accused European countries of an “unacceptable silence”.
