Eso da que puede abastecer como máximo a 500.000 personas, con un consumo de 550W por persona y día... mucho más que otros métodos, pero teniendo en cuenta que las desaladoras se dan en zonas donde llueve poco y suele haber mucho sol, se podría poner una planta solar junto a las desaladoras y que fueran casi autosuficientes.
Aproximadamente necesita 1 placa por persona, aproximadamente 1 hectárea de placas solares. No me parece tanto, realmente.

Sin embargo, en 2007 sólo funcionana al 25% de su capacidad (por falta de energía!) (www.informacion.es/vega-baja/2007/07/29/planta-san-pedro-funciona-25-7) y los últimos datos que he encontrado dan que tiene una prducción media de 22-25 mil m3 de agua, es decir, aprox un 33% de su capacidad.
